They’re creepy and they’re kooky…

Filed under: Shady stuff — Shades @ 8:55 pm

We’ve just firmed up the venue for my half-Century celebration next April. We were going to use the Morley Rugby Club (as used for Karen’s 40th several years ago) but the price had gone up somewhat and they never rang us back despite leaving messages.

Then Karen asked about the Morley Masonic Hall, which can be hired for Weddings and such. It is marketed as “Thornfield House” and is a rather eccentric looking Victorian Mansion visible from the Motorway.

I’d been there before, but Karen had not, so we arranged to visit tonight.

Driving up the path in the dark, the building is reminiscent of the Addams Family Mansion, something all three of us decided separately. Here is a snapshot from a flyer to set the scene.

Inside, the hall is graced by a substantial old Grandfather Clock. The bar area has a welcoming fire, whilst small and large rooms are available for the function. The club stewart was happy to lay on a Yorkshire Supper (Pie and Peas) as we have thrown away so much food at previous events. (Our friends are more interested in liquid refreshment!)

The function room was set in traditional Masonic fashion for Festive Board, with the top table for the Lodge Officers. needless to say, David made straight for the Master’s chair. (He does the same in Courts and Council Chambers, the Royal Box in theatres).

For our do, we will have a Disco (we have Morley Radio Superstars to call on) and will use round tables around the dance floor.

On the way out, David was encouraged to do his J Arthur Rank impression on the dinner gong. He wants to do it again in April!

We are suitably impressed, it is booked and actually a better venue than the Rugby Club for our purposes, although smaller capacity (it is 150 in the Bradley Suite). We now need to filter down our friends list to 110 people maximum, Four months to go, flyers are being prepared for the Christmas Cards. Start clicking those fingers…

  1. It is a very impressive building indeed

It was William Middlebrook’s house, who was mayor of Morley, Lord Mayor of Leeds, and MP for Leeds South, all around 1900. Obviously nowt better to do! ;-)

I have been in it a few times, and the clock is always the first thing to notice. I always wonder what it was like to live there.

  2. PJ, it is still lived in, by the Stewart. You have been in it a few times? Did you see the goat? ;-)

  3. A fine place indeed, but what if we all come? You are very organized.
