Coombe Abbey

I just read something interesting about the place with a tenuous link to myself- GEC used to have it as a halls of residence for apprentices from 1952 until 1964. When I was a GEC apprentice myself in 1976, we lived in a big old building called The Grange, which was also the GEC Golf Club. (It is now the GEC Social Club).

I took a lot of shots last week, here are a selection of the more interesting ones.Plaster detailing in the bedroomThe North corridor- complete with tomb! The atmospheric lobbySteps up into the four poster bedThe fabulous window view of the west gardens- even on a drizzly dayOne of the pedestal light sconces in the bedroomA (bath)room with a viewThe canopied bath & toiletThe poshest toilet I’ve ever seenThe view of the bathroom from the bedroomThe slippers to go with the fluffy robesThe maid’s night message on the pillowThe unusual light fitting on the main staircaseDecorative birdcage on the west corridorThe west corridor facing northThe west corridor facing southSuit of armour in the lobbyThe north corridor complete with bustsThe west wing from the moat bridge at nightThe cloister area facing the west wingThe east wing (Victorian extension) complete with faux traitor’s gate

A history of the building can be found here.

Splodascopes and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy…

My blogging has been a bit lightweight this week- I’ve had Man-Flu.

oil_wheel1.jpgWhen I was in Birmingham on Saturday, I noticed something familiar & unexpected in the Central Library- a projected oil wheel effect in the lobby area for some exhibit or other (and not about 70s disco lighting effects either!)

There was a problem though- it was static and should have been slowly rotating so that the oils mixed and bubbled.

The best effect from that era was known as the Splodoscope, where a small pump blew air bubbles through the oils, causing them to gloop. (The animated .gif below gives you an idea what it was like). I did ask my hire company mate whether he had splode attachments for his big high intensity projects that I could use at my party, but he said there wasn’t much call for them these days.

An interesting Splode site is Here- (source of the .gif). They even have a quicktime movie.
