This was a Carole Bayer-Sager/Bacharach song off one of her albums and I was surprised to find out that the Carpenters had performed it. A soft, gentle ballad, although to my ear somewhat over-orchestrated.
Looking at Carole’s Wikipedia entry, I never realised how many songs she had been involved in for others.
I always found the Carpenters somewhat schmaltzy, but I thought that Close to you was spot on so I’ll drop it in here.
I used to like the Carpenters. I never heard that first song before.
