Fuel oil is hugely expensive in Britain now, people only have it through lack of alternatives (i.e. no gas supply & don't want to invest in storage heaters).

We used to use paraffin & Calor Gas in scabby rented houses from my student days.

(For those who don't know, Paraffin is also known as Kerosene and Calor Gas is butane, or sometimes propane)

Bum bum bum bum...ESSO BLUE!

Well the clever clogs in our country sell our natural gas off to the Americans where they burn it to make electricity for their air conditioners! Then when winter comes we have to buy it at largely inflated prices because of this demand. Not only that, the local gas distribution company was sold to the Americans who later sold it back to us, at an even greater price. I remember in the seventies when we were all persuaded to convert to gas heating from oil because it was so cheap. Not for many years.
