The Miner and the Weaver

Filed under: Culture — Shades @ 5:41 pm

Our new statues have now arrived in Morley and the Council have even replanted the flowerbeds. We guessed right in that the man was on the right and the woman the left, but it might have worked better the other way round as the benefactors would be better suited to be round the back methinks. There is a third mini-tombstone as well, advising of CCTV cameras in the area. The close-up of the faces makes them look a bit pop-eyed, carving eyes is always tricky.

I rather like them.

More Bolling Hall

Filed under: history — Shades @ 8:12 pm

As yesterday’s post created some interest, I thought I’d put up some more photos from the weekend. They are thumbprints but can be clicked on to see a screen size image.

Elizabethan Summer Celebration

Filed under: Shady stuff — Shades @ 7:39 pm

The leaflets said “Look out for the pink blimp!” but seeing as how there were 60mph gusts on Sunday, it was unsurprising that it was not to be seen over Bradford’s Bolling Hall museum. The hall is an interesting pastiche of styles from the 15th to the 18th Century, as befits a family residence that has evolved over the Centuries. It was given to Bradford in 1915 by the last owner who couldn’t afford to restore it in exchange for a piece of land next door to build a girls school.

It seems that such displays are under threat, according to these guys.

Des Res with sea views…

Filed under: Culture — Shades @ 3:18 pm

When we were on holiday in Hunstanton, I noticed for sale signs up outside the lighthouse. I was vaguely aware that it was possible to rent it from previous holiday planning, but it is a bit pricey for three of us (or four with a Granny). However, for a mere £695,000 you too can own a grade II listed building with a four bedroom house attached. The Estate Agent blurb is here.

Peering at the Pier

Filed under: Shady stuff — Shades @ 12:05 pm

When we went to Cromer, it was a bit overcast and the sea was very stormy. By the time we climbed the church tower later in the afternoon, we could hardly see the pier in the mist.
