Woof and Chips

Filed under: Culture — Shades @ 8:04 pm

We had a great holiday in Whitby last week, somewhere I haven’t really looked round before, despite being only in the next County. It is very hilly and hard on the knees so I had to resort to the walking stick as the week progressed.

One thing that is very obvious down on the quayside is the popularity of the Magpie cafe. Here it was with queues outside earlier in the week.

On our last full day, we decided to go there for tea. We had to queue for twenty minutes or so, but they popped out and checked on the size of the parties and our group of five managed to get in before a larger party.

Inside, it was surprisingly calm, serene and smart. It is much more like a Restaurant than a Cafe with friendly staff and an extensive menu. I went for regular Cod, Chips,Mushy Peas and Bread & Butter, a seaside staple.

I have to say that it was the best fish and chips I have ever tasted (and probably the most expensive!). It turns out that TV Chef Rick Stein spoke highly of it a few years backĀ  and since then it has been incredibly popular.

One thing that was on the menu but “off” was Woof and Chips which Karen assumed was Dog-fish but on enquiring was actually Cat-fish. The menu depends on the catches being landed of course but Whitby is famous for its fish.

It opens at 11:30am and closes at 9pm during the season, well worth travelling 100 miles for and Whitby is worth travelling from anywhere for- apart from the dog poo, a caveat from Karen.
