Photos from York

Pictures of people talking at conferences aren’t terribly interesting, so here are a few other shots.

No evil…

I saw this cartoon on the Anglo Saxon Chronicle today.

It reminded me of these three delightful Putti I saw in a Brugge show window. As an exercise for the reader, you may decide which one is which out of the three unwise monkeys- Broon, Balls, Smith.

A splendid day

My trip to York was certainly memorable- an hour travelling on trains/Taxis/Mum’s Taxi, five hours in meetings and six hours in a Pub!

The first AGM was small and far from perfectly formed, but a fascinating example how how ordinary people came to be politicised by ordinary callous intrusion of the state. My own tipping point was IR35, the turnover tax. Others cited planning rules, recognition of corruption in politics or even an increasing awareness that events they had personally witnessed were not being reported accurately by the Press.

More later.

A short post tonight

Some interesting things going down, I’m a bit busy at the moment but I will enjoy writing about them at a later date.

Tomorrow, I am going to my first political party conference, the small but perfectly formed UK Libertarians. The meeting is in York and I’ll be taking my camera, of course.

When will the first blogger get “DA Notice”d?

Filed under: troughing — Shades @ 8:05 pm

Imagine you have been happily married for eleven years. Your spouse, Prudence, looks after the money but seems to run it well.

Then one day, you accidentally open some post meant for Prudence. The letter is printed in red and is from a dodgy debt management company. In it, you discover that your spouse is maxed out on all of her 600+ credit cards, has lots of dodgy loans and has been in collusion with your friends to hide this all from you so that it doesn’t end in acrimonious divorce. By your reckoning, Prudence can never pay this back and your grandchildren will still be lumbered with the crippling debt.

Are Labour voters starting to get that sinking feeling that their relationship is on the rocks?

Dizzy has unearthed something very interesting about the Private Finance Initiative schemes and several other bloggers are now digging. What is particularly interesting, however, is the total silence of the mainstream media on what is an explosive story.

(A DA notice is a supposedly voluntary request from the Government to the media not publish certain things in the national interest).

Here is an Excel spreadsheet listing the PFI deals, courtesy HM Treasury. It is certainly out of date as it doesn’t include Morley leisure Centre Newleaf.
