Trip to the tip

Filed under: Snake oil, troughing — Shades @ 10:42 pm

The Friday evening before last, we forgot to put our green recycle bins out, with all the fuss to prepare for Grandma Pat comung and us going to Brugge. They are only emptied every four weeks and we were woken at 7am by the beeping of the bin wagon reversing into our close.

At the weekend, I got hold of three big plasic sacks and decanted the three main materials into them- tins/cans, plastic bottles and paper/cardboard. I was expecting to have to go to our community tip in Middleton (which is miles away but our nearby tip is just over the county border and they don’t let Morleians in, it is guarded by Kirklees Council staff with flaming torches and pitchforks.

However, we do have recycling facilities in the car parks of Morrisons and ASDA, so as we were going into town anyway, I thought I’d check out the Queensway facility. (I knew it did glass, paper and clothes so I could empty one bag at least).

On arrival, I was pleased to see that the materials accepted fitted what I had brought, so I got on with it. Here is a guided tour of the facility.

Hang on though, nowhere for plastic bottles. Let us check that sign again…

Hang on- where is the red container? There isn’t one. Fortunately there was a large unmarked orange skip with bottle holes in the side and when I peered in I could see plastic bottles and bags in there, so that is where mine went.

It is a shame that Leeds City Council repeatedly show themselves as chocolate teapots when it comes to the detail.

  2. That looks surprisingly neat and tidy I’d say. Seem like more time would have been spent on the photographic record than the recycling. Once every four weeks? We get once a week recycling but only once every two week greenery pickup which is not enough with our garden.

  3. Bengbeng, compulsion, not motivation. There is an army of snooping inspectors ready to catch us out. My main motivation was two full bins and no chance of them being emptied for another four weeks.

JMB, it took ages to put all the things in the skips as they are designed for small amounts at a time only. The snaps took all of 90 seconds.
