The Argus. A giant or a dog…

Bradford’s local paper is the Telegraph and Argus. curious to what an Argus actually was, I looked it up.

1. Classical Mythologya giant with 100 eyes, set to guard the heifer Io: his eyes were transferred after his death to the peacock’s tail.
2. a son of Phrixus and builder of the Argo.
3. (in the Odyssey) Odysseus’ faithful dog, who recognized his master after twenty years and immediately died.
4. any observant or vigilant person; a watchful guardian.

I assume they meant definition number four, but some in Bradford accuse the paper of being the lapdog of the Council.

Anyway, there was mild amusement at their front page website headline today…

Police in appeal to trace two missing men

Police have renewed an appeal for information about a missing man who suffers from schizophrenia…

It turns out they were looking for someone else as well, not double-counting the guy with a split personality.

Here are a couple of contrasting items of street furniture in the City Centre.
