Belated pictures of Whitby Bridge

The gates are shut, the northern leaf has been turned and the southern leaf is ready for turning. The control panel can be seen below the right hand lamp post.Looking up the river with the bridge open. The bridge presents a seventy foot opening to shipping with both leafs open.Looking down at the main pivot bearing upon which the bridge leaf rotates. These extensive cogs need regular greasing.Looking downstream towards the harbour mouth. The large barge with the crane on the right was about to go through the bridge David in the front row for the talk about the bridge on the Monday evening.

    At the talk on Monday, the speaker mentioned that a Park & Ride scheme was imminent for the Town. This was greeted with sustained, ironic laughter…
