We have just spent a very pleasant week down in Cornwall, staying on a small, quiet caravan site.

Reviewing my photos, I was bemused to see that visitors to St. Michael’s Mount were happy to paddle across the still covered causeway rather than queue up for the little boats.

(We caught the boat going, walked across a dry causeway returning).

I get quite a lot of pseudo spam, for stuff I might be interested in if I wasn’t being spammed about it.

I’ve recently installed Windows 7 on the laptop and as it failed miserably to upgrade (from Vista, even though it is supposed to be able to) I bit the bullet, backed up and did a clean install. A consequence of such a drastic action is the need to hunt down license keys and sometimes interim versions of programmes to get back to where I was before the drastic action. (Curse you CyberLink!)

Anyway, I have to retrain my Thunderbird mail handler to recognise spam so I have been paying closer attention to incoming mail and whether the email address is obsolete or whether it is more prudent to unsubscribe.

Today, I had a mailing from the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Noticing that it was to a legacy mailbox, I clicked on the change email/unsubscribe box, to be presented with the following page:

You are subscribed as ian.grey@delicolor.org.uk
You can either unsubscribe or update your information.

Unsubscribe:

Update:

E-mail address:

Interests:

Long Lead Jazz Mags:

So, WTF are “Long lead jazz mags?” As in Bongo mags? Someone is having a laugh…

Talking of having a laugh, David, Pat & I went to see Avenue Q in London on Saturday night and the show is absolutely hysterical, although it is also very, very, rude. (With a bit of luck, it might go on tour so that Karen can see it as well.)

So, the Trekkie Monster was right…

You might expect a Greengrocer to write muddled captions but the Morley Obtiser had the following in very large font:

No police as men intrude nursery

This didn’t make sense to me, the use of intrude as something you do to something rather than in it. I don’t think it is an Americanism, indeed the mighty Google can find no example on the interweb of those last two words used in that order.

Was it done in a rush? Perhaps they started with invade nursery then decided it was a bit strong so used a Thesaurus. Perhaps the journalist is not a native english speaker, or Johnston Press no longer care.

(The story isn’t important enough to be put online, apparently three travellers were involved but the story doesn’t elaborate as to why they wouldn’t leave and concentrates more on discussion about Police response to the non-urgent number. Indeed the story write-up can only be described as unhelpful as it is contradictory. It gave a local Councillor a soap box to spout forth from though).

p.s. the apostrophe is meant to be in the wrong place in the title, as well as the semi-colon. It is supposed to be ironic…

I was happily cutting the front lawn when I saw a flurry of movement out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought it might have been a mouse or a small squirrel, but when I peered over the ornamental bushes I was surprised to see a frog sitting on the pavement. As it was likely to get squished if it carried on in that direction, it was coaxed back into the garden and onwards into the back garden.

It then decided to pose on the frog shaped sandpit before hiding in the weeds round the base of it.

I
I’m not certain whether it is a frog or a toad. I’m not aware of any ponds nearby, or any princesses, for that matter.

We knew that they had given up chocolate for Lent and as it was adult birthdays, then a kiddy cake wouldn’t really be right.

Then David spotted a huge pink French fancy by Mr.Kipling. It seemed so right that we also bought a box of small ones as well, as David had never had one before. (Actually, they are ASDA clones, called fondant Fancies). Sponge, jam, vanilla cream and icing. Very soft and gooey!

p.s. The Mr. Kipling Wikipedia entry has an extremely childish currently live defacement edit on it and the previous recent history ones are hysterical if you are aged about 14…

Shower curtains don’t last forever, especially with Yorkshire water. Our last shower curtain was chosen by David and it has been regularly washed since then but it is starting to look a little tired. We have a thermostatic electric shower over the bath which does an excellent job of maintaining the temperature regardless of other tap activity (such as the washing machine). We bought it when David was old enough to shower although I don’t recall when we bought Baloo, the bear from Jungle Book.

Anyway, we had been looking for a new shower curtain but Karen’s mum had bought a cheap one recently and found that the pole curtain ring holes were not reinforced. So when we looked at the ASDA selection we were unable to determine the strength of the upper seam, as they were all packed and folded in such a way that the top was not visible through the sealed packaging.

After a trip to the tip this morning, we went to B & Q to check out their shower curtains, and also to find if they had any non-slip pads for David’s bed. (We didn’t find anything, but I did get a short length of pipe lagging just to put round the top where he climbs into the bed, as he was stubbing his toes from the unfamiliarity of climbing in and out. (Ikea sell non-slip strip, so we will go there at some point).

David chose a shower curtain with simple spots this time, I was pleased to see that all the B & Q shower curtains were packed in such a way as to be able to see the top hem and our choice had metal reinforcing rings.

A couple of oddities at B & Q- firstly a “plasma screen” electric fire, reduced from £899 to £599. (No flue or gas necessary). It even made crackling noises. Even if it wasn’t a recession, I don’t think I’d be getting one of those, I was happy to keep the green curtain rings from Baloo for spotty…

The other oddity was a large metal staircase used by the staff to get to the upper shelves if the cherry pickers & fork lifts are in use. On the gate to keep customers off, was a sign saying Shrinkage alert! Not to be used in the garden centre. Now I understood the term shrinkage to refer to shoplifting by employees in the retail sector, although Wikipedia suggests it is all forms of loss from manufacture to point of sale.

I wonder if enterprising scrotes use the stairs to chuck merchandise over the fence to accomplices, or if you just can’t trust those garden gnomes to not try to make a bid for freedom?
